The writer’s hut was envisioned as an escape into the remote brushlands of a waterfront site in the San Juan Islands of Washington. The hallmark of the design is it’s ability to close tightly when not in use or when the owners are not in residence on the island. Ipe decks are lifted by cable driven winches to completely encase the space in a steel and wood crate. A hideaway bed, kitchenette, full bath and wood fired stove enable the cabin to be a fully functioning getaway or guesthouse.
Working with the contractor and engineer, Paul Schlachter designed the complicated system of pulleys, winches and cables so they work in perfect unison.
